French Fry Casserole
In search of simple recipes that everyone in the family will enjoy? This French fry casserole has fast become a top pick for my family. It’s the perfect combination of crispy golden fries and a cheesy hamburger, making it the best kind of comfort food.
The key ingredients in this casserole are juicy, tasty ground beef and crunchy French fries, making a dish the whole family can’t wait to eat. Even the kids!
What’s more, this yummy dish can be prepped ahead of time and kept until you’re ready to dig in. All you’ll need to do is grab it from the fridge and pop it into the oven.
It will quickly become a family favorite just like in our house! If you have a pound of ground beef in the freezer, it’s a great way to use it up.

Ingredient Notes
- Frozen crinkle-cut french fries – If you can’t find crinkle-cut, any bag frozen french fries will work. The thin or shoestring fries get extra crispy!
- Ground beef – Try to use lean ground beef if possible, but any ground beef can work. Substitute ground turkey or even ground pork.
- Seasoning – I like to use steak seasoning to make it taste more like a hamburger or you can add garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper as a basic seasoning.
- Condensed soup – This recipe uses a cream of mushroom soup and a cream of onion soup. Substitute sour cream or any other cream based soup of your choice.

- Add a single layer of cheese over ground beef. Spread frozen french fries on top. Place in preheated oven and bake for 30 – 45 minutes until layers of french fries are crispy and cheese is bubbly.
- Remove and coat with hamburger toppings like lettuce, pickles, green onions, any remaining cheese, ketchup, or mustard.

Serving Suggestions
I personally suggest pairing it with roasted Brussel sprouts or a refreshing side salad, like a Caesar or a classic house salad.
If you’re looking for something a bit more filling, green beans or collard greens also make fantastic side dishes.
My Favorite French Fry Recipes To Make
Store leftovers in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat in the microwave or in a 350F oven until warmed through. Place under the broiler for a minute or two for crispy fries.
I personally like the flavor that sharp cheddar cheese brings to this recipe, but you can use any cheese that you would typically order on your hamburger. To mix it up, try a Mexican three cheese blend with pepper jack or combine your sharp cheddar with a little bit of blue cheese for an interesting twist.
You sure can! My husband prefers tater tots to fries so I make this change all the time.
Tips For The Best Casserole
- Try topping your casserole with bacon bits mixed with cheese and green onions.
- When reheating this recipe after freezing it, make sure to cover the casserole with some aluminum foil so that your fries don’t cook too quickly. The bottom layer of meat usually takes longer to heat up, and the foil on top helps distribute the heat more evenly.
- To add a unique flavor, switch out ground beef for taco meat and choose a Mexican blend cheese, adding refried beans, nacho cheese sauce, or pico de gallo.
