Beanie Weenie Casserole
Beanie Weenie Casserole switches up the classic comfort food into an easy casserole. Tender hot dogs mixed with smoky beans and topped with a crispy tater tot topping makes for a budget friendly dish the whole family will love.
Ever heard of Beanie Weenies? They’re a blast from the past that remind me of my younger days.
In this case, “Beanie Weenie” is all about a can of baked beans mixed with sliced hot dogs. It’s just the special name Van Camps gives to their unique product.
So, if you can’t find Beanie Weenies in the store, don’t worry. A can of pork and beans will do just fine. You could also pick up hot dogs and baked beans separately and make it work that way.

Serving Suggestions
If you are serving beanie weenie casserole as a main courses, then you might need some ideas for sides.
In this case, I recommend side dishes on the lighter side, since the casserole itself is quite filling.
A great side dish for this meal is a crunchy and cool coleslaw, or green salad. Want more vegetables? Try it with some roasted broccoli or Arkansas green beans.
How long does it last?
Store any leftover casserole you have in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
Reheat in the oven or in a large nonstick skillet until heated through.
Can I freeze it?
Make this ahead of time and freeze for later. If wrapped tightly, you can freeze it for up to 3 months.
Thaw overnight in the fridge and reheat in the oven at 350F until heated through.
What is a beanie weenie?
Classic franks and beans, a convenient canned meal, goes way back to the Civil War when it was used as a ration.
Van Camps didn’t necessarily invent franks and beans, but they sure made it popular.
Hot dogs are a great way to feed a family on a budget. But if you happen to get some ground beef on sale, or buy it in bulk, try my Big Mac casserole and my Sloppy Joe casserole.

Tips for the Best Casserole
- If you don’t happen to have tater tots you can use frozen shredded potatoes.
- Want to have a cornbread topping? Make the corn bread mix according to package directions and pour over the top. Bake as usual.
- Try different hot dogs or sausages. Be sure to cut into bite size pieces.
- If you like a little sweetness in it, try a tablespoon of maple syrup or light-brown sugar.
- Want it spicier? Add a dash of Worcestershire sauce, extra dry mustard, or chili powder.
- Check your cheese topping to make sure it is melted and a little browned but don’t let it burn.
- Let it cool briefly before bringing it to serve if you plan on serving from the casserole dish at the table.
- Great as leftovers on the next day just like these Dutch Oven Carnitas I make too.
