Ingredients Needed

  • Frozen crinkle-cut french fries – If you can’t find crinkle-cut, any bag frozen french fries will do.
  • Ground beef – Try to use lean ground beef if possible, but any ground beef can work.
  • Steak seasoning – If there is no steak seasoning at the store, you can make your own using a few simple ingredients, like garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  • Cream of mushroom soup – The can of cream of mushroom soup can be swapped for sour cream or any other cream based soup of your choice.
  • Cream of onion soup – If you can’t find cream of onion, double up on cream of mushroom.
  • Shredded cheddar cheese – Cheddar cheese can be replaced with the cheese of your choice.

How To Make French Fry Casserole

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Spray a 9×13 baking dish with cooking spray.
  2. In a large skillet, over medium high heat, cook beef with steak seasoning over medium heat to medium-high heat until meat mixture is browned. Drain excess liquid from ground beef mixture if you would like.
  3. Add condensed soups to cooked ground beef and stir to combine. Remove from heat and spread meat mixture in casserole dish.
  1. Add a single layer of cheese over ground beef. Spread frozen french fries on top.
  2. Place in preheated oven and bake for 30 – 45 minutes until layers of french fries are crispy and cheese is bubbly. Remove and coat with hamburger toppings like lettuce, pickles, green onions, any remaining cheese, ketchup, or mustard.

What Should I Serve This Casserole With?

This hamburger casserole pairs perfectly with a lot of other American style foods.

I personally recommend roasted Brussel sprouts or a light side salad, such as a Caesar or house salad with diced onions, green peppers, tomatoes, and cucumber slices.

For more hearty sides, you can also serve with green beans or collard greens.

Can I Store Leftovers From My Fries Casserole?

To make this casserole ahead of time, store leftover french fries and hamburger casserole in an airtight container or covered tightly with plastic wrap.

Remove all air before storing it in the fridge for up to 3 days.

To reheat, place in the oven or air fryer and cook until the casserole is heated all the way through and the cheese on top is bubbly and browning again.

What Other Types Of Cheese Can I Use?

I personally like the flavor that sharp cheddar cheese brings to this recipe, but you can use any cheese that you would typically order on your hamburger.

To mix it up, you can use a few different types, such as a Mexican three cheese blend with pepper jack or combine your sharp cheddar with a little bit of blue cheese for an interesting twist.

Best Casserole Tips

  • For a salty topping, try covering your casserole with bacon bits mixed with cheese and green onions.
  • If you want a strong cheese flavor, you can use condensed cream of cheddar cheese soup rather than cream of mushroom.
  • When reheating this recipe after freezing it, make sure to cover the casserole with some aluminum foil so that your fries don’t cook too quickly. The bottom layer of meat usually takes longer to heat up, and the foil on top helps distribute the heat more evenly.
  • To add a unique flavor, switch out ground beef for taco meat and choose a Mexican blend cheese, adding refried beans, nacho cheese sauce, or pico de gallo.
